The Wedding Day:
• Wedding Day of a Tamil marriage ceremony starts early almost 4 am in the morning. But infants and children are not mandatory in the ritual. Only the bride and the groom should be at the ‘Vratam’. It is an oath-taking ceremony that is played by both families. They give their esteemed oath and then visit a temple after it. ‘Vratam’ can be due on the wedding eve too.
• After ‘Vratam’, guests start seeping in to execute ‘Kashi Yatra’. It is a representative tour of visiting Varanasi by the groom. Actually, in the past, boys habitat to visit Varanasi after finishing their education to become a sanyasi. A similar custom is performed by the groom. He puts on a traditional dress with sandals and holds Gita in hand and the only word comes amazing. According to this tradition, he walks towards the entrance profess that shows he is doing a Kashi Yatra. The father of the bride now comes in front of him to stop him from leaving home so that he can give her daughter's hand to the bride and give her all responsibility to him. After the groom agrees and said that he will not to go Kashi and promises to marry his daughter, then ‘Oonjal’ starts.
• ‘Oonjal’ another ceremony, known as a swing ceremony which is carried out just before exchanging garlands between the bride and the groom. This ceremony is signified as extreme fun and liveliness. Garland exchanging is quite the same all over India. Guests and family members sing songs to open out happiness in the overall.
• To enjoy Oonjal the bride and groom are served with milk which is a sweet nutritive drink prepared with bananas. The women of both families spread the drink. The Tamilians sing traditional songs specially dedicated to this event, which makes the function a bit more traditional. And then starts the main event of ‘Kanyadaanam’ along with ‘Maangalya Dhaaranam’.
• At the time of Kanyadaanam, the bride has to sit on the knees of her father when the pandit chants some specific mantras committed for the occasion. Then the father gave her daughter's hand to the groom. And hands over his daughter’s responsibility to his son-in-law and take a promise from him to take care of his daughter forever.
• Next, the bride wears the saree which is gifted by her life partner. She hangs it in traditional fashion and the groom’s sister helps her with it. The bride comes to the mandapam again where the groom is busy following marriage rituals. Now it’s the time where the groom has to tie the mangalsutra around the bride’s neck. After that, the groom holds the bride’s hand and takes the round of the fire of the agnikund. Now, the time of ‘Saptapadi’. By bend down, he helps his bride in taking seven rounds around the fire. The ritual of Saptapadi is almost the same as all over India. The bride and the groom need to take an oath together after completing each ‘fera’. After finishing those, the groom escorts his bride towards a pounding stone which is usually kept next to the agnikund so that she can keep her foot on that. It is the sign of the bride’s power and responsibility for prime a smooth and happy married life by demolishing all the hurdles on the way.
• Then come the ‘Honam’, where the groom and bride sit in front of the agnikund to seek blessings from God.
• When every ritual is finished, they go for a grand banquet together with their families and guests. It is come after by the Nalangu ceremony where the young couple plays games and songs.
• Then in the last is ’Griha Pravesham’ when the bride enters the groom’s house.
